A leading human rights lawyer suggests that sexual harassment and the objectification of women are still common features in many of the country’s top professions.
Baroness Helena Kennedy says sexism is still a problem in British society with women not challenging colleagues about it for fear of damaging their career prospects. She compared modern attitudes with the covering up of the allegations surrounding the late Jimmy Savile and claimed there was almost a general acceptance about sexist behaviour which, if left unchecked, could lead to the sort of abuse which has been alleged of the former DJ.
Baroness Kennedy sees great potential in a new generation of young professionals but stressed there were still issues to be addressed in relation to gender equality, not least equal pay. She added: “Until you have that equal evaluation of the contribution men and women make, then there will be an undervaluing of what women do.”
