Many people who struggle with Domestic abuse find it extremely difficult to break free from their abuser due to fear and a sense of feeling “trapped”.

“If I do leave, where do I go?"

It is not uncommon for perpetrators of domestic abuse to isolate their victims, making it very difficult to flee the situation.

Under the Domestic Abuse Act, from this month, Councils are to prioritise finding suitable accommodation for victims who have become homeless as a result of the abuse suffered. This will ensure more safety for victims and also give them to courage and support to report the abuse they are subject too. Reporting the crime to the police is the first step in order help a victim. Many are then able to claim compensation from the government funded ‘Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority’ (CICA).

This is a government funded scheme devised to help victims of violent crime claim for their injuries. Although it cannot take away from what has happened, it is a small step to help victims move forwards.
