New figures show that there has been an increase in the number of younger drivers putting lives at risk from unnecessary road accidents by being found to be drunk behind the wheel.
The official statistics show that 1,746 drivers under the age of 25 tested positive in breath tests, a rise of 6.4% on last year although the proportion of motorists being found to be over the legal limit has fallen slightly whilst the number of people failing a field impairment test for drugs also fell.
Sir Peter North has already produced a report for the government urging the limit to be cut from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg, claiming that it would save hundreds of lives. If adopted it would bring Britain into line with most of Europe.
Edmund King, AA president said of the increase: “Hot summer nights, barbecues and the World Cup are no excuse for this reckless behavior. Although the numbers tested for drug-driving are relatively low, the fact that over a fifth were deemed unfit to drive is frightening.”
