New research is showing that more drivers than ever are using their mobile phones while driving
The worrying statistics, from Halfords, show that the use of phones for social networking has doubled since a year ago while the number texting while driving is up by a quarter. Those using their phone to receive calls is up by a third. The research was done to mark the fourth anniversary since legislation came in with tougher penalties for those who used their phones while driving.
It is an offence to cause or allow another to drive while using a handheld phone or a similar device, but many who admitted to the charge said they only did it in stationary traffic or at traffic lights when they were red, even though that is also illegal.
