More men than ever are having cosmetic surgery to remove their “moobs” with figures in Leeds reflecting the national trend.
The Transform Cosmetic surgery group said its clinic in Leeds has seen a big rise in the number of men wanting breast reduction surgery in the last two years especially. It said that there has been an overall increase in male patients of 42%, with a third of that figure wanting breast reduction treatment.
The Leeds clinic’s figures support the national picture with recent figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) showing a 28% increase in “moob” jobs in 2010. The procedure is now the second most popular surgery among men, with only “nose jobs” being more common.
Dereth Keily, surgical co-ordinator at Transform’s clinic in Leeds, says that television is a big influence among those contacting the clinic about treatment. She said: “Men are very shy about it but they only have to see a few shows like that and it gives them the confidence to pick the phone up, ring the call centre and then they come and see us.
“Extra fat on the chest can make men feel very self-conscious because a man wants to feel like a man and we all associate fat on the breasts with a woman. I think they feel it’s a bit anti-male.”
