Plans to create a special barbecue area in Leeds are set to be scrapped.
The executive board at Leeds City Council says that parks watch officers have been successful in preventing barbecue activity through enforcing byelaws and this will continue as an alternative to creating a designated trial area at Woodhouse Moor in the Hyde Park area of the city.
The use of barbecues is banned in Woodhouse Moor and other parks in the Leeds area but this has not prevented people in the past and has prompted the council to take action to try and resolve the problem. The increased presence of park watch officers is thought to be behind new figures which suggest a falling off in barbecue activity in parks from April to May.
The plans for a special area reserved for barbecues has been fiercely criticised by local groups with opponents saying the area was too big and that it would spoil the natural appearance of the park. They were also concerned about the increase in litter and the possibility of more anti-social behaviour.
