New figures have shown the number of jobless fell in Leeds during the last month although the government warns that the true picture is being camouflaged.
The number of people in Leeds claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) fell from 24,513 in May to 22,551 in June but Employment Minister Chris Grayling says that thousands of “economically inactive” people are not included in the figures.
In Yorkshire overall there were just over 143,000 claiming JSA but the Department for Work and Pensions says there are another 290,000 on other benefits such as income support and incapacity benefit. The coalition government is pledging to retest everyone currently claiming incapacity benefit in an effort to cut that figure and claims that the previous Labour government ignored the large number of people claiming out of work benefits.
Mr Grayling said: “One of the points you will hear me make month after month is that we are looking at this as more than simply claimant count and unemployment. What we are looking at is the bigger picture of those people who are on out of work benefits.”
