Drink driving arrests down in North Yorkshire

Recently released figures from North Yorkshire Police have shown a fall in the number of people arrested for drink-driving offences in the region compared to the same period the year before.

A total of 81 people were taken into custody in December compared to 108 in December 2009. Eleven of those arrested have been charged with offence while a further 10 have already been disqualified.

The force ran a “shop a drink driver” campaign before Christmas, encouraging members of the public to inform the police about any drivers they suspected were over the limit. Traffic Sergeant Ian Pope, of the North Yorkshire force’s Road Policing Group, said: “Although it is pleasing that the message does seem to having an effect, it is astounding that people are still driving while impaired through drink or drugs. It is dangerous, it is illegal and it ruins lives. People need to realise this and think before they get behind the wheel.”
