The cold weather which has gripped the UK for over a week shows no signs of abating.
More snow and ice is expected in many regions this week and motoring groups are preparing drivers for “the worst ever pothole season” on the nation’s roads. The Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has announced that he is temporarily relaxing restrictions on lorry drivers working hours, allowing them to work for up to 10 hours to enable supplies of food, fuel and gritting salt to be delivered.
The bad weather has already seen seven people lose their lives including two men who were killed in a crash on the M62 in East Yorkshire and two teenage girls who were killed when their vehicle collided with a Royal Mail van in Cumbria.
Forecasters say the sub-zero temperatures, which have affected all parts of the UK, will be here for most of the week although there may be a slight thaw by Friday.
