The road safety charity Brake has urged drivers to always have suitable footwear when going behind the wheel following a new survey which revealed that many currently don’t.

The survey, commissioned by price comparison website Confused.com, found that 40% of women have driven in high heels with a similar number wearing flip flops. Slightly smaller percentages admitted driving in slippers and in bare feet with just over a third claiming to always wear sensible shoes when driving. Plenty of men also admitted driving barefoot or in flip flops although 57% said they would never wear unsuitable shoes. The survey also reported that 10% of women applied make-up while driving and 15% of men admitted shaving whilst at the wheel.

Commenting on the survey, Brake said that it was a serious topic. Deputy chief executive Julie Townsend, said: “It is deeply worrying that many drivers have such little regard for their own and others’ safety that they wear unsuitable footwear.” She added that driving was a responsibility that had to be taken seriously.
