As significant a figure as Bill Ford junior has said that he expects to see computerised cars on the roads before this decade is out, with them becoming widespread by 2050. A scary thought for those involved in the legal industry … you can picture the scene with computer malfunctions being the number one cause of road accidents in the future!
The great-grandson of Henry Ford, who is executive chairman of the Ford Motor Company, spoke at the 2012 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and said that new technology will be introduced in three phases with car-to-car warning systems and functions for autopilot driving in slow traffic coming into production within the next few years.
He said that between 2017 and 2025 would see semi-autonomous driving with increased interaction between vehicles while from 2025 onwards he expects to see more fully autonomous vehicles, with new technology resulting in as many as four billion cars being on the roads by 2050.
Ford said that cars are fast becoming mobile communications platforms and though they are currently unconnected with each other, this will change in the next few years with the new technology aimed at reducing congestion and helping to prevent the risk of accidents.
Ford is launching its B-Max family car at the forthcoming Geneva motor show; the vehicle includes a feature to alert emergency services in the event of an accident. It is due to go on sale in the UK in September.
The world can only watch and wait but you have to ask … surely there is a limit to how much we should rely upon technology…???!
