North Yorkshire Police have said that an anti-drink drive campaign launched for the World Cup was a success.
Figures released by the police show that of 113 drivers tested during June in the city of York while the DES designated driver campaign was running, only one tested positive for alcohol, while in North Yorkshire as a whole, only two percent of those tested were positive.
The figures for both York and North Yorkshire rose slightly after the campaign ended but Inspector Dave Brown said the figures were encouraging. He said: “This is a really good result. The Association of Chief Police Officers' figures suggest a national fail rate of 5.9 per cent, so for us in York to have less than one per cent prove positive for drink driving, in June shows that the campaign has had some impact.”
The success of the campaign may lead to further ones in the battle to cut drink related road accident casualties.
